Vaikunta Ekadasi – The Gateway to Heaven
The gateway to heaven is opened on Vaikunta Ekadashi – the most important Ekadasi in Sri Vaishnava tradition. Vaikunta Ekadasi, also famous as Mokshada Ekadasi or Mukkoti Ekadasi is an important festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the Tamil month of Margazhi and is observed on the 11th day of Dhanurmasam or Dhanurmasa Ekadashi. Vaikunta Ekadasi 2012 falls on January 5th
Ekadasi means ‘the eleventh’ in Sanskrit and refers to the eleventh day of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha) belonging to a lunar month. It is one of the most auspicious days to worship and to offer abhishekam to Lord Vishnu as it is the most significant of the twenty four Ekadashi observances. This is the ideal day to seek for spiritual redemption or to rescue from the existing confusion and suffering.
On Vaikunta Ekadasi, ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ or the gateway to heaven is opened which is the passage encircling the innermost sanctum of the Lord. People observe a fast and worship lord Vishnu on this day to be absolved from all the sins and to attain Moksha as The door to heaven will be kept open for the soul after it leaves this physical body. The soul does not have a rebirth anymore and attains the lotus feet of the Lord.
Vaikunta Ekadasi – The Legend
In the Krita Yuga or The Golden age, an asura named Muran was troubling humanity. Everyone went to Lord Shiva, but he directed them to Lord Vishnu and it was on this day that Shakti – Vishnu’s female energy – emerged out of his body and vanquished the asura Muran. Lord Vishnu was pleased and named the female energy as Ekadasi. He blessed her with the power to free the sins of people who take fast on this day. He also declared that people worshipping her would reach Vaikunta, Vishnu’s abode, as the gateway to heaven will be kept open on this day. Since Lord Maha Vishnu’s female energy is dominant on that day, worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi on this day is very auspicious.
