World Meteorological Day| World Meteorology Day | WMO

22 Mar

World Meteorological Day is celebrated on the 23rd of March every day. It is celebrated with the purpose of establishing meteorological networking stations to utilize them for improved weather forecasts. It can be done by linking the meteorological station networks through telegraph. The idea of World Meteorological Day was canvassed by The International Meteorological Organization.

The International Meteorological Organization acts as UN’s specialized agency for meteorology, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. It plays an imperative role in contributing to people’s safety and welfare by providing food security, water resources and transport. World Meteorological Day has been made practical on the 23rd of March every year since 1961. This year, World Meteorological Day comes with a theme, that is – Climate for you.

World Meteorological Day and Meteorological Promotion

Standardized and advanced climate prediction methods in collaboration with other regional and international organizations and programs, helps decision-makers and users plan and adapt their activities and projects to expected conditions. In this system, assessments may be taken in planning and forecasting which reduce risks and increase socio-economic benefits. The success of seasonal forecasts depends on a detailed knowledge of how the atmosphere and ocean interact.

The prospect of forecasts on seasonal and longer timescales (like rate of whether rainfall or temperature, and by how much) shows enormous potential benefits. These forecasts are the most sought after products for longer-term decisions and early warning of potential hazards, but any forecast credibility depends on their track record. Climate forecasts will have to demonstrate skill beyond the climatologically experience that is currently used to make decisions.

How World Meteorological Day Is Celebrated?

Various events are organized on World Meteorological Day such as conferences, events, exhibitions and symposia for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the general public. On this day, awards are presented for meritorious professionals in the field of meteorological research. A few of the most prestigious awards in this context are The International Meteorological Organization Prize, The Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award and Professor Dr. Vilho Väisälä Award. Many countries issue postage stamps to mark World Meteorological Day celebrations.
