Vaikunta Ekadasi or Mukkotti Ekadashi, one of the important festivals dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is observed during the month of Margazhi (December-January). Vaikunta Ekadasi denotes the 11th Waxing Moon that falls in the Tamil month of Margazhi and it is strongly believed that this is the day to unload all your past deeds and pray for salvation.
Vaikunta, hailed in Vedic traditions to be the ultimate place to enter and rest after one’s soul departs from the body, signifies the sacred abode of Lord Maha Vishnu. While Ekadasi, is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu in traditional Hindu calendar.
Vaikunta Ekadasi 2014 falls on January 11th and it is believed that Fasting on this auspicious day helps in redemption of sins and in attaining Moksha. Vaikunta Ekadasi, which is known as Swarga Vathil Ekadasi in Kerala, is more elaborately celebrated by Vaishnavites.
